After a severe winter, this is when your fish are at there weakest. Parasites and pathogenic bacteria will affect a weak fish much easier than a strong healthier one.</li> <li>Clean the filters in pond water. Restart the filters using Strata filter start bacteria additive</li> <li>Change UV bulbs to prevent water from going green and reduce pathogenic bacteria levels. It is necessary to change UV bulbs twice yearly as UV will only be emitted from the bulb for 6 months, even if the bulb continues to glow.</li> <li>Treat pond with a course of parasite treatment as the water reaches 12`C / 54F. A malachite and formalin or general anti-parasite treatment will reduce the risk of parasite infestation on already weakened fish. Ask in store for advice and dosages.</li> <li>Test water regularly (at least weekly) for ammonia, nitrite and pH while your filter system re establishes itself, after the cold winter, filter clean and parasite treatments. Weakened fish will struggle to survive if left in a poor environment for a prolonged period.</li> <li>As the temperatures increases, change to a protein diet. Feed the fish at least twice a day (if water quality permits) to allow them to rebuild there strength and body weight. (Remember to stop feeding for 2 days when treating for parasites)</li> <li>Regularly vacuum the pond to ensure any debris does not decay in the pond resulting in poor water quality. </li> <li>If you intend to totally drain and clean your pond, do so before the water temperature reaches 15'C / 60F. </li> <li>Re pot any water plants and lily's using fish safe aquatic soil or lytag planting media. Adding a fertiliser stick will ensure growth and flowering throughout the season. </li> <li>Be careful when using any chemicals around the pond (E.g. lawn feed, patio cleaner, slug pellets plant sprays etc) as these are highly toxic to fish and aquatic life.</li> <li>Add filter start once the filter clean and course of parasite treatment is complete to re-establish filter bacteria.</li> <li>Book your personal spring home visit.
