Wheat germ, multi season or medicarp when water temperature drops below 12`C / 54F if koi are actively looking for food. </li> <li>Stop feed immediately if fish show no interest as semi hibernating or if fish are active but a cold spell is predicted. </li> <li>Test water weekly for nitrite, ammonia and pH. Water problems can often occur as heavy autumn leaf fall begins to decay or due to poor filter maintenance or filters cleaned too late for the filter bacteria to re-establish</li> <li>Do not over disturb semi hibernating Koi as this severe stress will cause the fish to use its energy reserves that it will require later in the spring as it comes out of winter. </li> <li>Add small heater to pond, and/or preferably leave filter and pump running to ensure that the pond does not freeze totally. This will trap toxic gasses below the ice.</li> <li>Turn off waterfall as the fine particles of water running down the fall will cause excessive cooling of pond water</li> <li>If possible place cover 6" above the water surface. This will stop wind chill excessively cooling the water. Using a clear plastic cover / poly carbonate cover will act in a similar way to a green house trapping a warm layer of air between the water and cover increasing the temperature of the pond.</li> <li>Do not place cover directly onto water surface. This will encourage pathogenic (bad) bacteria to populate in this area. </li> <li>Be ready to act if koi emerge from winter unwell.
